Johannesburg is the economic powerhouse of South Africa and one of the continent’s largest cities. Founded on gold mining in 1886, it’s a fast-paced, sprawling metropolis of skyscrapers, shopping malls, and bustling commerce. Often called “Joburg” or “Jozi,” it’s a city of stark contrasts, where immense wealth exists alongside significant inequality. 1886: Gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand ridge. This triggered a massive gold rush, almost overnight transforming the empty veld into a chaotic mining camp. Late 1800s – Early 1900s: Rapid growth attracted people from across the world. The city became the epicenter of deep-level gold mining, creating immense wealth but also harsh, segregated labor compounds for Black miners. 1948-1994: Under Apartheid, Johannesburg was meticulously engineered along racial lines. The city center was for whites, while Black residents were forcibly relocated to distant townships like Soweto (South Western Townships). Soweto became a focal point of the antiapartheid struggle, notably the 1976 student uprising.
